Kylian Mbappe made a point of celebrating Jan Vertonghen's own goal in the Belgium defender's face as France progress to Euro 2024 quarter-finals.

A word or two was said in Vertonghen's direction and Mbappe ended up being spoken to by the referee afterwards.

It wasn't a moment in isolation from Mbappe. Some bad blood had already been brewing between the pair after Vertonghen appeared to accuse the Frenchman of diving to try and win a penalty earlier in the game. He clearly took exception to that and had confronted his opponent about it, deliberately and aggressively bumping him.
France are into the last eight of a major international tournament for the seventh time in a row – a run that began at Euro 2012. On the tougher side of the knockout bracket, they will face the winner of Portugal and Slovenia for a place in the semi-finals.
